An interesting comment on Tolstoy -- I think I agree, for the most part. For my own part, I would not assert that happiness is the inverse of misery. Misery (such a strong term!) can be a real constitutive part of well-being, I would think, though the ways in which this comes to pass can differ from culture to culture.

In the larger view, I have no clear idea what happiness is either. Partly, it is a kind of peace that comes from passionate commitment. Partly, it's about being "congenitally dissatisfied" that the goal of your commitment is the right one for you to embody. Partly it is being free from a desire to control one's life (perhaps the Taoist in me) and partly also the capacity for meaningful social immersion (the Confucian in me, and also you, from what you write about your relationship to your two year old).

I suppose Way is vast?
